Dr Martha Newson is currently a postdoctoral researcher on the ERC funded Divergent Modes of Ritual, Social Cohesion, Prosociality, and Conflict project, under the supervision of Professor Harvey Whitehouse. She gained her BSc Hons. degree in Human Sciences at the University of Sussex (2011), and her MSc (2013) and DPhil (2017) in Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology from ICEA, University of Oxford. Martha works with football fans, hooligans, and more recently radical Muslims, to tackle key questions around group identity, self-sacrificial behaviour, and inter-group conflict. She uses cross-cultural, survey-based, and experimental methodologies and has field sites in the UK, Brazil, Australia, and Indonesia.
