The School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography supports postdoctoral and 'early career' fellowships from internal applicants and from applicants outside of Oxford.
If you are interested in making an application, the first step is to seek a mentor or sponsor who is an academic member of the School. You must have the agreement of both the individual academic and the School in order to make an application. Once you have identified a mentor, contact our Research Co-ordinator who will provide further information.
It is strongly recommended that you contact the School in good time (8-10 weeks before funder deadline) if you wish to make an application to a particular scheme or schemes. Links to the funder schemes usually supported by SAME are given below. The list is not exhaustive and other schemes may be considered.
Step 1. Obtaining support (note that there is often a scheme-specific deadline and gathered field evaluation for this step)
All prospective applicants must initially provide:
- a cv
- a summary of the intended project (1-2 A4 pages max)
- details of the funding scheme (or a link to the online details)
- a brief statement of support from the mentor
The proposal will be considered by the Research Committee which recommends support or otherwise to the School. All applications will be assessed on academic merit, the viability of the proposed research project, the extent to which the work fits with existing interests of the research cluster, and the extent to which the research speaks to broader interests within SAME. For calls attracting a gathered field, applications will be ranked. The School will also consider its research priorities and resource or space implications when reaching a decision and it does not necessarily support all applications. Please note that School funding in support of post-doctoral positions is not normally available.
Step 2. The application
All external funding applications require the support and approval of both the School and the University's Research Services Office (RSO). Therefore internal deadlines for completion of the application are usually at least two weeks earlier than the funder deadline. The Research Development Officer will assist in completing the financial information for your application.
We strongly recommend that you engage your mentor in the application process and consider carefully any feedback. You should visit the relevant section of the funding body's website and regularly check it for any changes to the scheme or the funding rules.

UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships
The School is not supporting this scheme at the moment. This decision will be reviewed from time to time and details will be available here.
Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships 2019
This scheme enables early career researchers to undertake a significant piece of publishable work over a period of three years. Applicants must have a track record of research, but should not have held an established academic appointment in the UK. The expectation is that Fellows should undertake a significant piece of publishable work (not a reworking or mere extension of the PhD/DPhil project) during their tenure, and that the Fellowships should lead to a more permanent academic position. Approximately 100 Fellowships will be available in 2019. Fellowships can be held at universities or at other institutions of higher education in the UK. The Trust will contribute 50% of each Fellows total salary costs up to a maximum of £25,000 per annum and the balance is to be paid by the host institution. Given the prestige of the awards each Fellow may request annual research expenses of up to £6,000 to further his or her research activities.
Departmental Selection Process
Due to the requirement for matched funding, the department will be able to support only one exceptional candidate for this call. We will therefore be running a departmental selection exercise. Any applicant wishing to be considered must submit an expression of interest via the following process.
Candidates wishing to apply to the department’s gathered field must first ensure that they meet the Leverhulme Trust’s eligibility requirements for this scheme (detailed here). In particular, potential candidates are advised to give serious consideration to the recommendation for institutional mobility made in the eligibility criteria. They must then submit the following to firstname.lastname@example.org by noon on Monday 14th January 2019 (Week 1, Hilary Term):
- A draft research proposal (maximum 2 pages, 12 point, 1.5 spaced)
- A CV (maximum 2 pages)
- A statement of support from the proposed SAME mentor (who must be an employee of the department)
All expressions of interest will be considered by a departmental panel, and candidates will be informed of the panel’s decision no later than Friday 25th January 2019. Support will then be provided for the two selected candidates by the SAME Research Development Officer and the Divisional Research Facilitator. The internal selection criteria will be as follows:
- Potential for research excellence
- Viability and quality of project in conceptual and practical terms
- Closeness of fit with departmental research priorities and benefits to department of hosting project/Fellow
- Significance of project, and potential to lead to permanent academic employment for Fellow
